Why Slamming, Jumping, or Throwing Matters More Than You Think

If you’ve been wondering why your training program sometimes includes medicine ball slams, explosive jumps, or throwing drills—rest assured: it’s not random. These movements are among the most crucial components of effective training. Let’s dig into why they matter, what the science says, and how to use them smartly.

What Is “Power” — And How It Differs from Strength

  • Strength refers to how much force a muscle can produce (e.g. max lift).
  • Power is about how quickly you can apply force — force × velocity. It’s the difference between pushing something slowly vs. moving it fast.

Both are important, but power has qualities that make it especially valuable, especially as we age.

Why Power Fades Faster Than Strength

Numerous studies show that power begins to decline earlier and more quickly than strength.

  • A meta‐analysis comparing power training vs strength training in older adults found that power training delivered greater improvements in muscle power and speed‐emphasized functional movements than strength training alone.
  • According to research, muscle power declines at a rate of up to 3–4% per year in older adults, whereas strength tends to decline at about 1–2% annually once you’re past middle age.

Why We Put Power Drills at the End of the Warm-Up

Because timing matters:

  1. Freshness matters — To do power work well, you need to be relatively rested. If you’ve already fatigued the muscles via heavy strength lifts, speed suffer. So placing slams/jumps early, but after the mobility and activation parts of the warm-up (i.e. once joints, soft tissue, nervous system are ready), allows maximal execution.
  2. Prepping for safety — The warm-up primes your joints, tendons, nervous system, so when you do explosive stuff, risk of injury is reduced.

You don’t need medicine ball slams to exactly mimic everything you do in life or sport. What you’re really training is energy, speed, and control.

  • A medicine-ball slam: that upper-body explosive movement helps with reactions, “getting hands up,” or pushing things away.
  • Jumping helps lower body explosiveness: stepping, preventing trips, pushing off quickly.
  • Even if the movement doesn’t look “real life,” it builds reserve capacity — having extra speed, extra reaction ability means you’re more resilient in daily life.

Over years, these gains pay off: better mobility, fewer injuries & falls, better ability to do things you want to do as you age.

Practical Tips: How to Do Power Work Right

  • Always start with a solid warm-up (mobility, dynamic movements, activation). Power needs prep.
  • Keep volume lower but intensity (speed) high. It’s better to do fewer high quality reps than many sloppy ones.
  • Use medicine balls, plyometrics (jumps, bounds), explosive bodyweight or weighted movements (e.g. pushing hard off the ground).
  • Prioritize safety: good form, controlled landings, joint health. If you have joint issues, modify (lower impact, reduce range, etc.).
  • Frequency: even once or twice a week of devoted power work can produce meaningful gains, when combined with strength training.
